Everything you need to know about this years Met Gala theme 2025

One of my absolute favourite days of the year is nearly here; the first Monday in May! So you know what that means it’s time to talk all things Met Gala. Get comfy, grab a brew (and maybe a biscuit), and let’s dive into this year’s theme, shall we?

So, the dress code for 2025 is “Tailored for You” which ties into the exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. It’s a love letter to Black dandyism and the way fashion has long been used as a form of cultural expression, personal power, and artistic rebellion. We’re talking sharp silhouettes, bold prints, luxurious fabrics, think velvet, silks, jacquards and the kind of immaculate detailing that demands a close-up!

This year’s Costume Institute exhibition, curated by Monica L. Miller and Andrew Bolton, takes inspiration from Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. It explores how Black individuals have used fashion as a powerful means of self-expression and resistance, tracing the evolution of Black identity through clothing across the Atlantic diaspora. From 19th-century items to modern-day designers, this exhibition highlights how clothing has always been a tool for shaping and reflecting identity.

The exhibition is organised around 12 characteristics of Black dandyism, influenced by Zora Neale Hurston’s 1934 essay The Characteristics of Negro Expression. It explores the way Black dandyism has continuously evolved, from its origins in the 19th century all the way through to modern designs by figures like Pharrell Williams and the late Virgil Abloh. So there’s going to be some incredible history on display, and I’m expecting to see that rich legacy reflected on the carpet.

The co-chairs this year include the effortlessly cool Pharrell, Lewis Hamilton, Oscar nominee and red carpet king Colman Domingo, style chameleon A$AP Rocky, and of course, the ever-present Anna Wintour. Add LeBron James as honorary co-chair, and it’s safe to say this year’s guest list is golden.

Expect to see experimental tailoring, richly saturated colours, deep greens, regal purples, burnt golds and cultural references galore. I’m predicting brocade suits with dramatic capes, sculptural outerwear, exaggerated shoulders, pearl detailing, maybe even walking sticks or layered jewellery à la 19th-century gentlemen with a twist. And for the women? Full looks inspired by classic suiting, gender play, old-school glamour, and ornate headwear.

And please for the love of fashion, can we skip the boring black tuxedos this year? I am begging the men to step it up. We have an entire theme dedicated to bold, expressive tailoring, and you want to give us… nothing? No. I want drama. I want flair. I want someone to show up in a crushed purple velvet suit with an embroidered train and a story to tell.

Anyway, I for one can’t wait to see who steals the show and who plays it safe. Let me know who you’re most excited for, and what kind of fashion moments you’re hoping to see!
